The Power of Checking In: Why “How Are You?” Matters More Than You Think

In a time when digital connection is constant but emotional connection is rare, it’s more important than ever to check in — genuinely. Not the casual, autopilot “How are you?” that gets a quick “I’m fine” in return. But the kind that pauses, looks someone in the eye (or texts with intention), and makes space for a real answer.
Mental health thrives on support, and that support often starts with a simple question. Research shows that people are more likely to open up when they feel seen — and sometimes that’s all someone needs to start their healing journey. A coworker quietly battling burnout. A friend silently grieving. A student afraid to ask for help.
Checking in communicates that they matter. That their presence is noticed and valued.
Here are three ways to check in more meaningfully:
Ask follow-up questions. “What’s been on your mind lately?” or “Is there anything you’ve been struggling with?”
Offer a judgment-free space. Let them speak without rushing to fix or minimize.
Follow through. A single conversation helps, but consistent presence builds trust.
Your words don’t need to be perfect. Your care is enough.
